To all my fellow misters and sistahs with thick, course, curly, kinky, mermaid hair… I feel you. Sometimes luxurious waves need a little extra care and over the counter products just aren’t your thing. If I’m putting something in my hair and on my scalp, I want to know exactly what’s in it. Que in my new, favorite, ultra luxe at-home treatment: Rhassoul Moroccan Clay.
Rhassoul Clay is a truly exquisite spa quality clay from ancient deposits unearthed from the fertile Atlas Mountains in Morocco. This mineral rich clay blends extremely well with water making its application to the face and skin smooth and effortless. This clay has been used for over 1400 years as a soap, shampoo, and skin conditioner, and the finest spas across the world currently utilize it for its therapeutic benefits. I first found out about this clay during a spa-date at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs. I had an amazing revitalizing massage + facial and my esthetician raved about how great this clay was for hair like mine (big, thick, mermaid hair). I ordered some clay online and have tweaked my recipe over the past few years and thought I’d share. Making a rhassoul hair mask is quick, easy, and leaves you with ultra soft hair.

Rhassoul clay can also be used for deep conditioning of the hair and skin. Feel free to adapt the following recipe to suit your unique hair needs.
- 1/2 c. rhassoul clay
- 1/2 c. warm coconut milk
- 1/4 c. rose water or herbal water (make your own infusion by pouring 2 c. boiling water over 2 tbsp. herbs or flower petals. Allow to steep for 30 minutes and strain.)
- 1/4 c. distilled water (double this amount if no herbal or rose water is used)
- 1 tbsp. coconut oil, jojoba oil, or extra virgin olive oil
Mix all ingredients except oil. Once you have a paste, stir in the oil. You may add a tad of honey at this point for added conditioning treatment. Apply to hair and allow to sit with a warm, moist towel or plastic hair cap for 1 hour. Rinse and style as usual.
