Medicated Turmeric Quinoa Bowls

Medicated turmeric quinoa bowls are one of my favorite plant-based meals. This recipe can be modified to your liking, so this can be a completely vegan, plant-based meal or your can add your favorite meats. This recipe utilizes four main ingredients that bring plenty of nutrition to the body. The four main ingredients include:

Medicated Coconut Oil Benefits

Coconut oil is a popular form to make medicated oil. Coconut oil contains Lauric acid — when digested, lauric acid creates a monoglyceride that acts as an antimicrobial agent. Coconut oil has among the highest concentration of fatty acids (good saturated fats). The abundance of these fatty acids in the coconut oil create a stronger binding agent for cannabinoids. Compounds in cannabis are fat soluble. Coconut oil has a very high saturated fat content for a plant-derived oil. Combination of these as a mixture can help boost the immunity and improve health

Turmeric Benefits

Turmeric is considered to be one of the most powerful herbs on the planet. As of right now, there are over 13,000 peer-reviewed studies on the topic of turmeric. Turmeric contains Curcumin, which is the active ingredient responsible for so many of its benefits. Research has shown that turmeric plays a responsible role in aiding in helping with depression. These results seem to be connected to the way curcumin impacts neurotransmitter function through the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).

Medicated Turmeric Golden Latte

Turmeric Tea or Golden Lattes have been a huge buzzword since 2016. If you’ve been in the wellness world for a while, you probably know about the immense amounts of nutritional and healing benefits turmeric has. If you haven’t tried a golden latte yet, you’re missing out! It is a creamy and dairy-free hot drink that’s packed with nutrients. By adding cannabis to this delicious and potent latte, not only will you be ingesting the nutrients of turmeric and ginger but you will be getting a lot of benefits from the cannabis plant as well. Turmeric may be one of the most effective nutritional supplement in existence. Curcumin is a component found in Turmeric that is strongly anti-inflammatory. In fact, curcumin is so powerful that it matches the effectiveness of some anti-inflammatory drugs, without the side effects.

When is the Best Time to Drink a Medicated Golden Latte?

There’s no wrong way to drink this medicated golden latte. However, due to the specific spices and herbs in this drink, studies have shown that this combination may help with better, restful sleep and relaxation. This drink is very warming and comforting, which is why I enjoy drinking this in the evening. Consuming turmeric supports digestion, immune function, liver function, and may even offer protection from some types of cancer.

What I love about this medicated golden latte recipe is that this drink actually maximizes the natural antioxidant power of turmeric because it is served hot and is combined with other beneficial spices and a little bit of fat.

Farmer’s Market Vegan Pad Thai Recipe

Vegan Pad Thai is one of my ultimate go-to recipes when I’m not too sure what to cook for myself. This recipe is fast, simple and my own twist for what I find seasonally in the Farmer’s Market. For those who want to add animal-based proteins, chicken or shrimp would be a great addition.

This dish is such a celebration of whole, clean eating with a mixture of beautiful bold colors. I love this dish for so many reasons. I love the rich, firey heat that lights up your Agni (Ayurvedic term for digestive fire). I love it because it’s easy and reliable and tastes good every time.

Gluten Free, Oil Free, and Vegan

Over the years I’ve been slowly learning to listen to my body. I’ve found that gluten and certain oils just don’t mix with me unless I’m highly active and constantly moving my body.I have learned to adapt and have found great alternatives to my all time favorite food in the world- Noodles. Rice noodles help deliver certain nutrients to the body such as zinc, fiber, and iron. After calcium, phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral in the body. These two minerals keep your bones and teeth strong and healthy. Phosphorus also assists in filtering out waste in your kidneys, and it helps your body store, process and use energy. Some of my favorite go-to rice noodles are Thai Kitchen Gluten Free Noodles. You can find this brand in any grocery store or order online.

Healing Bone Broth Recipes

Bone broth is an excellent source nutrients and minerals. Bones in general carry an array of essential nutrients, anti-inflammatory and gut-healing proteins, rich, healthy fats, joint-health properties and more! Once the paleo and whole30 diet trend blew up, bone broth came full circle and was re-branded for a must have super food.

Why should bone broth be a healthy staple in my diet?

Bone broth not only tastes delicious on its own, it also aids in longevity, vitality, and overall health. Good, locally sourced bones can give you up to 45-50% of protein by volume. It’s important to note that bone broth also carries amazing benefits beyond protein. Paleo Leap mentions,

“Collagen, the protein matrix in bones, tendons, ligaments, and other flexible tissues, is broken down during the cooking process into another protein called gelatin. Gelatin is the reason properly prepared broth congeals in the fridge.”

Collagen is a major ingredient you find in many beauty products to keep you skin looking fresh and youthful. Collagen is essential for a bright health and appearance, and this protein is also necessary to reduce the typical signs of aging. It is also an important building block for elasticity, and its ability to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Personally, it took me a while to get used to just drinking bone broth on it’s own. Due to the fact that I’ve never had anything like it before, I couldn’t fully enjoy the taste. While I was used to having regular “soup”, sipping on bone broth seemed to foreign. It tasted bland to me. I needed to kick it up a notch. Below are some of my favorite “go to” recipes with a bone broth base.

There are several more excellent benefits that bone broth helps attribute to better health and overall wellbeing. Platforms like Cognitune has a great post highlighting the benefits of bone broth here.

Although for this recipe to be fully raw means that this soup would not be cooked, it does not mean you’ll be slurping down a cold bowl of green muck. I call this recipe a “soup” in very loose terms. Go into this recipe knowing it won’t be hot in temperature. Kick it up a notch- adding turmeric, cayenne, ginger to this recipe adds all the heat you could want!

Asian-inspired cucumber salad

This cucumber salad is delicious, quick and easy to make. The temperature is slowly rising and the LAST thing I want to do is turn on my oven or stove top and cook. I’m craving more fresh vegetables, light food, and greens. I’ve been playing around with this recipe for a while. This Asian-inspired salad and superfood dressing will definitely be a favorite this summer, I’m sure!

Superfood Dressing

Yes! You heard right. The combination of turmeric powder, moringa powder, kava kava and raw honey makes this dressing a delicious and ultra healthy addition to your life. Moringa powder is great for inflammation, a great source of iron and is healing and detoxifying. Kava Kava root powder improves mood and is said to help anxiety, as well as stimulate dopamine receptors. Raw Honey has anti-viral and anti-fungal properties, while carrying highly potent enzymes.

What you’ll need:

  • Spiralizer (For those who have asked, I use this spiralizer, and I’ve been obsessed since!)
  • Salad bowl
  • Whisk

Ingredients:

18939450194_038a13c91f_c  902ac16eef2fd0e7a22c5d417f947963  24545643fb1de8497566c0e0daceb5ca  CucumberSpaghettiuntitled

Instructions:

      1. For the dressing: Whisk together in a bowl the rice vinegar, lime juice, kava kava powder, moringa, raw honey, sesame seeds, and turmeric powder. Add salt to taste. Set aside
      2. User your spiralizer to cut cucumbers and carrots into a long noodles. If you don’t have a spiralizer you can use a julienne peeler instead.
      3. Place the spiralized cucumber into a strainer and toss with 1 tsp. kosher salt. Let the cucumber drain for 10-15 minutes to remove excess water.
      4. Once the cucumber has been drained, spread all noodles onto a layer of paper towels, or a clean dish towel, and gently pat out as much moisture as you can. Place the “noodles” into a large bowl, and add 2-3 TBSP dressing, to coat. Toss to combine, then garnish with additional sesame seeds, sliced scallions, and fresh cilantro. Serve immediately.

Notes for Asian-inspired cucumber salad:

Leftover salad can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one day. Please keep in mind that the cucumber will continue to release excess water as it sits. Drain the water from the bottom of the bowl before eating if the salad becomes soupy.

To create a completely vegan dish, add raw agave nectar instead of honey for salad dressing.

Superfood Sunday – Baobab

I’ve heard about Baobab once while I was living in San Francisco. I had no idea it was an amazing Superfood. What is Baobab? The Baobab tree is found in Africa, and is called, “The Water Tree”. This tree can hold up to 60,000 gallons of rainwater in it’s trunk. Yes- 60,000. They are also able to live up to thousands of years, even in the harshest conditions. This tree serves several purposes and can be used in a variety of ways. Its bark, roots, leaves, fruits, and flowers, are all used for a source of food, and respiratory, skin and digestive remedies.

The Baobab fruit looks like a large brown seed. The superfood powder is made of ground seeds from inside the fruit that offer a flavor of caramel pear and grapefruit essence. The Baobab fruit is one of the only fruits to completely dry out while still on the tree. Just using 2 tablespoons of Baobab powder can give you a wealth of nutritional benefits.

The Benefits of Baobab Powder

  • 10x more antioxidants than Goji berries
  • 15x more vitamin C than pomegranate
  • 6x more potassium than bananas
  • 3x more calcium than milk
  • 3x more magnesium than apricots

How to Use Baobab Powder

It’s fairly easy to incorporate Baobab powder into your diet. For those who can’t start their morning without a super smoothie, I highly suggest adding 1 or 2 tablespoons of Baobab powder. For a quick and nutritious snack, add 1/2 to a full tablespoon of Baobab powder into yogurt. Overnight oats, chia seeds, honey, vanilla and a tablespoon of Baobab powder make a great breakfast porridge. Thinking of making a cold soup? Add some Baobab. The possibilities are endless with this awesome super fruit.

My Favorite Brands of Baobab

Baobest Baobab Fruit Powder – Great flavor, and will slightly thicken smoothies, as well as adds a very healthy boost to them. Very filling and nutritious. I like the packaging and the ziplock on this bag the most.

Bonga Foods Organic Baobab Superfood – For anyone who is quick on the go- I highly recommend this powder. It dissolves quickly and easily in water and comes in a fantastic container that you can easily transport anywhere.

Superfood Sunday- Moringa

Ever since moving to Mexico, I’ve been obsessed with this amazing superfood, Moringa. The Moringa tree has been called, “The Miracle Tree” for hundreds of years, and rightfully so. Moringa is a powerhouse of health-enhancing nutrients, amino acids, and antioxidants. I can guarantee that Moringa is the next hot superfood.

For those of you who follow my recipes I post on Facebook and on my blog, you may remember my super green smoothie with Nopales and Moringa added into it. It’s one of my go-to recipes when I need an extra boost of energy and keeps me full all morning.

Moringa Background

India’s ancient tradition of ayurveda medicine has sited over 300 ailments and diseases that are treated with the leaves of the Moringa tree. Traditional ancient medicine uses the whole tree- from the roots, leaves and seeds (pods) in their medicinal recipes. The leaves are the best part of the Moringa tree, because that is where you get such high, vibrant levels of vitamins, like A, B, and C. The leaves can be sautéed like spinach, eaten raw in a salad or added into pesto, or they can be dried and used in soups, sauces or other recipes.

Vital Energy and Detoxification

Moringa is best known as an incredible source of nutrition and natural energy booster. It has also been said to  help lower blood pressure and is an excellent sleep aid. Moringa leaves are used for many reasons such as skin disorder treatment, sleep improvement, relief of chronic anxiety, diabetes, and depression. Its detoxifying effect may come from Moringa’s ability to purify water- the pods of the Moringa tree have been known to purify water the same way activated charcoal sticks. Moringa acts as a coagulant attaching itself to harmful bacterias and impurities.

22b35273be84a289d3e6f4b67b6ab438   Moringa Powder    Moringa Leaf

In Mexico, I feel very fortunate to have this miracle tree right in my own neighborhood (seriously, the streets are lined with them). However, I know that Moringa is slowly coming to the forefront of peoples consciousness of the healing properties just a few tablespoons of Moringa powder can provide. Below I’ll source where I order my Moringa from online, as well as a short review.

Health Benefits

  • 25x more iron than spinach
  • 7x more Vitamin C than oranges
  • 4x more Vitamin A than carrots
  • 3x more Potassium than bananas
  • 2x more Protein than yogurt
  • 4x more Calcium than milk
  • 92 variable cell-ready nutrients
  • Powerful source of Vitamin B-6 and Magnesium
  • 46 Antioxidants
  • 36 Anti-inflammatories
  • 18 Amino Acids

Kiva Organic Moringa Leaf Powder– I’m fully obsessed with this brand. I’ve tried a few powdered versions of Moringa, and I feel this gives you the perfect consistency when added to hot water or nut milk without having a chalky consistency. For the value and quality, $20.00 USD gets you a pound of Moringa Powder. Do you know how long that will last you?! It’s amazing.

Organic India Moringa Capsules-For those who prefer to take their supplements in pill form, I’d recommend Organic India Moringa Capsules. These have a very high rating on Amazon, it’s available through Prime, and are easy to swallow. I’ve only tried these a few times since I like powder for more, however, this is a great supplement that I would recommend to anyone looking to add Moringa into their life.

Moringa Powder –This company is a great source for all your superfood needs. I highly recommend this brand to those who are just starting out, looking for high quality brands to choose from that want to source high vibrational foods, herbs, and powders at a mid-range price. This powder has a nice bright green color to it, with a bit stronger flavor than other powders I have tried. I’d recommend starting out with 1 tsp. and go from there to get used to the taste.

Superfood Sunday!

The more I spend time investing into my health and studying the healing properties of herbs and food, the more excited I am to share with everyone. Now, unless you’ve been living in a cave for the past 5 years, you know that goji berries have been the top superfoods mentioned on every list. First off, what IS a superfood?

A superfood is a nutrient-rich and nutrient-dense food considered to be extremely beneficial in well-being and health.

So what’s the deal with Goji Berries?

For the past decade, Goji berries have been grown in the US due to their ability to be drought tolerant and adaptability to be grown in part shade. The Goji berry is originally native to China, however, thanks to farmers growing them locally in the US, it is fairly easy to source high quality berries within the US. Goji berries contain 21 trace minerals including geranium (which is rare to find in foods). They are a great source of vitamin C and beta-carotene. I also recommend Goji berries to my vegan friends, as they are a high source of protein – they actually have the highest concentration of protein of any fruit in the world.

Here is a list of other amazing benefits for Goji berries:

  • Has been claimed to help support immune function
  • Has a highest level of antioxidants
  • Helps fight free radicals that contribute to cancer and aging
  • Provides body with Vitamins B1, B2, B6 and E
  • Promotes healthy skin
  • Helps stabilize blood sugar
  • Aids in detoxifying the liver
  • Has been claimed to boost fertility
  • Keeps energy and mood up
  • Anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal

What-Makes-Goji-Berries-A-Top-10-Super-Food_ft-480x330  1426549_10200437631657808_196090326_n  1000983_10200511124644799_1444473190_n

Where Do You Purchase Goji Berries?

It’s fairly common to see Goji berries at any health food store or even major chain now a days. But how do you know if the berries are sourced from high quality producers? Personally, I always check to see if the berries I’m purchasing are organic. Organic goji berries may cost you a pretty penny, but in the long run, when it comes to your health – does a few extra dollars really matter? Over the years I’ve tried a handful of brands for Goji berries, and these are my favorites:

Navitas Naturals Organic Goji Berries

Healthworks Certified Organic Goji Berries

Goji Berries in Bulk from Rose Mountain Herbs

Amazing Grass Green SuperFood Berry (Goji + Acai Powder)*

* This is currently one of the highest rated goji powders on Amazon.com with over 7,000 reviews and is one of my go to powders to put into my shakes and smoothies!

Sexy Self-Love Superfood Smoothie

February is upon us and it’s one of my favorite months of the year. I used to be so over the superfluous valentines ads and decorations that in hindsight I realize I was so detached to loving myself it made me resent the marketing of this specific holiday, and much of whatever was around me. My big intentions over the past few years have been to go deeper into self-love and self-care and I feel it is the ultimate way for me to tap into my inner-goddess.

I made a smoothie this morning that woke me up and made feel energized to take on the day. I’m happy to say with a bigger work load than normal, this Sunday hasn’t been lazy and chill, but I’m fully energized and alert to get my projects finished.

Sexy Self-Love Superfood Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1 Banana
  • 1/2 cup grapefruit juice
  • 1/2 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1/2 cup frozen raspberries
  • 1 tbsp superfood mix
  • 1 tsp honey
  • dash of pink himalayan salt

Directions

Blend all ingredients together and drink immediately.

After hosting a client at our house in Mexico for a week long cleanse and rejuvenation, I was introduced to Nutribullet’s Superfood blend. Typically I have all ingredients in hand separately, but I found it really nice to have a small compact zip tight bag to bring on hikes, throw in our bag for overnight trips, and to throw into smoothies and goddess bowls. Included in the blend is cocao, maca, goji, and chia. I’ve found when blended together with raspberries and strawberries it makes one of the most delicious flavor combos. It’s hard not to feel sexy after sipping on this delicious superfood smoothie.

Currently Reading: Everyday Super Food

Jamie Oliver  is quite possibly one of the most incredible public figures we have in our generation when it comes to revolutionizing how we look at food. I grew up watching him and others on the Food Network channel and was always captivated by the bright colors of the fresh produce he used, and the rustic, delicious meals he would create. He, among many other chefs, inspired me at a young age to take charge of my health and at age 14 I bought my first cook book and life (and our kitchen) was never the same again.

The premise of his new book, Everyday Super Food is based around super food ingredients and a balanced lifestyle and diet. No brainer. What I love about this book is it’s a no dogma philosophy on how to view food. If you know me personally, you know how much of an advocate I am on superfoods and nutritional healing. It’s a journey I’m currently on and I’ve seen the amazing benefits for myself along with friends and family. Incorporating high vibrational foods is just something everyone should do to live a happier, healthier life. This book is SO needed and SO welcomed in the world of health, food, and wellness.

Below is one of my favorite recipes in Jamie’s new book. Enjoy! To purchase your book via amazon, click here.

Black Rice Pudding with Passion Fruit

CZheUFjUYAAlOZ3

Ingredients

  • 200 g black rice
  • 1 ripe mango
  • 1 lime
  • 1 tablespoon blanched hazelnuts
  • 1 tablespoon coconut flakes
  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 200 ml hazelnut milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • manuka honey , optional
  • 4 heaped tablespoons natural yoghurt
  • 2 wrinkly passion fruit

Instructions

Cook the black rice according to the packet instructions, overcooking it slightly so it’s plump and sticky, then drain and cool. Meanwhile, peel and destone the mango, blitz the flesh in a blender with the lime juice until smooth, and pour into a bowl. Separately, toast the hazelnuts and coconut in a dry frying pan until lightly golden, then bash up in a pestle and mortar.

Meanwhile, peel the bananas and tear into the blender, the blend with hazel nut milk, vanilla extract, and two-thirds of the black rice. Depending on the level of sweetness you like, you can also add a tbsp of honey. Once smooth, incorporate blended ingredients with the rest of the rice. Spoon over the blitzed mango, squeeze half a passion fruit over each one, then delicately spoon over the yoghurt and sprinkle with the hazelnuts and coconut.

TIPS

Hazelnut milk contains vitamin B12, helping us to think properly and stay alert, while hazelnuts are super-high in vitamin E, protecting our cells against damage.
